In 2016 I participated in a Sociology-focused Study Abroad program from Santa Fe College to Örebro and Stockholm in Sweden. Under the direction of Professor Doug Diekow I explored the differences in expectation and encouragement of multilingual competency in Sweden compared to that of the United States. I studied and interacted with students and faculty at the Tullangskolan institution in Örebro, and my learning went far beyond just what was required for my research. I developed friendships with many students at the institution, whom I kept in touch with after leaving and who subsequently invited me back as their guest to attend Tullangskolan's graduation in Örebro the next year. I did so, enjoying the hospitality of my friends and their families as I witnessed such a momentous occasion in these students' lives. From a sociological perspective, it was quite fascinating to be in the midst of age old traditions and festivities surrounding graduation from gymnasium in Sweden, which is quite unique and aligned to the historical evolution of education in the country. This also cemented my many friendships in Sweden whom I still enjoy to this day.
